i waited
for his arms to uncross
for the book to open
but the pencils remained
a still life
guarding his secret
that i understood
i caught him
why couldn’t he realise i was waiting
patiently
so patiently before i had to play again
i wanted shapes and scratches to
dance against the rhythm
in a duet
but the pencils remained
poised against the plaid background
quietly listening in stillness.
